Random Moment #18 – Pink Martini

Pink Martini is an American band that defies classification. We liked their music for its diversity. Founded in 1994 in Oregon by Thomas Lauderdale – the pianist, their music crosses multiple genres – classical, traditional pop, latin and jazz. Because their songs also uses multiple languages, they are a perennial favorite in the global music scene. Two vocalists have been associated with the band – China Forbes and Storm Large.

1 – Sympathique
2 – Dream A Little Dream
3 – Mayonaka No Bossa Nova
4 – Una Notte Napoli

Random Moment is a playlist series we started during the COVID pandemic in 2020. There are typically 4 songs in the playlist which is curated to suggest and sustain a musical mood or idea in 10 to 20 minutes of listening time. The choice of music ranges from classical to modern pieces, and from rock to dance tracks.

Spotify is the best way to enjoy the playlist. Although a subscription is required to listen to the full length of each tune, you can play a sample without a subscription.

Happily, a live version of “Sympathique (Je ne veux pas travailler)” sung by China Forbes with the band is on YouTube.

A live version of “Una Notte a Napoli” is also on YouTube.

Pink Martini will be playing a few dates in San Francisco towards the end of the year. Hopefully we can catch them on stage.

This is the 18th playlist. If you enjoy it, the earlier playlists can be found by either clicking “Random” at the top of the page, or click “playlists” under Category at the bottom of the page, or searching on the EXPLORE page.
